Middleham Bridge closure

We would like to make you aware that the historic Grade II listed bridge linking Middleham and Leyburn has been closed to all traffic following a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).

Following the incident, North Yorkshire Council engineers carried out a detailed inspection of the structure and identified significant damage to one of the bridge arches. Large sections of masonry have been displaced and fallen from the structure as a result of the impact.

The damage was assessed on 4 September 2026, and engineers have confirmed that the arch is currently too unstable for temporary repairs to be undertaken that would allow the road to safely reopen. As a result, the bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a plan for repairs is developed.

Concrete barriers and fencing have been installed to secure the site and prevent access to the bridge to ensure the safety of all road users.

While the bridge remains closed, motorists are advised to use the following diversion routes:

From the south towards Leyburn: A6108, B6268, A684 (Via Masham, Bedale and Leyburn)

From the north towards Leyburn: A1, A684 (A1 Bedale and Leyburn)
